COLOMBO, March 19 (Xinhua) -- Dry weather conditions in Sri Lanka caused by the El Nino phenomenon will continue until April, Meteorology Department Director General Athula Karunanayake said on Tuesday.

Commenting on the prevailing dry weather, he said Sri Lanka can experience some rain from March 21 to 23, but this will not reduce the heat.

Water levels in reservoirs used for electricity generation and drinking water are at about 75 percent capacity, he said, urging people to use piped water and electricity sparingly.

He said heat warnings have been issued covering most parts of the South Asian country and children, the elderly and pregnant women must be vigilant against heat shocks.

The temperature in most parts of Sri Lanka is about 2 to 4 degrees Celsius above normal, he said.
