COLOMBO, March 13 (Xinhua) -- Sri Lanka is to introduce a modern multi-day fishing trawler equipped with advanced technology and operational methods to enhance the fishing industry, a state minister said on Wednesday.
Addressing a press conference at the Presidential Media Center, State Minister of Fisheries Piyal Nishantha de Silva said the development of the new trawler is conducted under the Ocean Freight Replenishment Program (OFRP), to align with changing times and incorporate climate change and alternative technologies, he said.
The government is also holding discussions with relevant institutions regarding the introduction of mechanical boats and boats utilizing solar technology, emphasizing a commitment to embracing environmentally friendly and sustainable practices, he added.
The state minister said that a fishing vessel monitoring system has been installed in 2,350 multi-day fishing trawlers in the country.
The fisheries sector plays a pivotal role in Sri Lanka's social and economic life, with some 2.4 million people directly and indirectly employed in this sector. ■
