KABUL, March 11 (Xinhua) -- Acting Prime Minister of the Afghan caretaker government Mullah Mohammad Hassan Akhund has called upon the nation's well-off people to help the needy families during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan which commenced on Monday.

According to a report by the state-run Bakhtar news agency, in his congratulatory message on the occasion of the Islamic holy month, Akhund called upon government officials and rich people to extend their support to the needy and impoverished Muslims including the quake-affected families across the war-torn country.

During the month of Ramadan, adult Muslims observe fast from dawn to sunset, abstaining from all food and drink throughout the day before the fast-breaking meal in the evening called iftar.
