NEW DELHI, March 8 (Xinhua) -- India's southwestern state of Karnataka on Friday banned the use of drinking water for other purposes including washing cars, gardening and construction activities as a drinking water crisis intensifies in the state capital Bengaluru.

The Karnataka Water Supply and Sewerage Board has decided to impose a fine of about 60 U.S. dollars on the violators.

The water shortage hit the Bengaluru city before the onset of summer.

Reports said more than 3,000 bore wells across the city have dried up. Experts attribute the situation to low rainfall in the past monsoon season.

Bengaluru is India's technology hub, hosting many multinational tech giants.
