N'DJAMENA, March 8 (Xinhua) -- Chad marked International Women's Day Friday with a call for women's active participation in politics.

Under the theme "Women's participation in the post-transitional electoral processes," commemorative activities were held in the national capital of N'Djamena.

Minister of Women and Child Protection Amina Priscille Longoh said Chad has made progress in empowering women politically, but women need to play an active role in shaping the history of the country, which has experienced political and social conflict.

"Our fight continues; it is a fight of quality, production, and peace," Longoh said while presiding over the activities.

"I would like to warmly salute the contribution of Chadian women in the construction and consolidation of peace, unity, and social cohesion in our dear and beautiful country," Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, Chad's transitional president, said via social media. "We must work together to eliminate the violence they face, but also to promote, to a large extent, the role and place of women in our society and guarantee that each of them can realize their full potential in a united Chad."

Women's rights groups in the Central African country have urged women to run for the presidential election, which will take place on May 6.
