RIO DE JANEIRO, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Botafogo have made a bid to sign Argentina World Cup winner Thiago Almada from Atlanta United, the Brazilian club has revealed.

Any deal for the 22-year-old midfielder, however, would only take effect when Brazil's next transfer window opens in July.

"We made a proposal of 20 million euros (22 million U.S. dollars)," Botafogo president John Textor told reporters. "We like Almada and we are interested. We didn't present a written proposal but we made our interest clear."

Almada is the biggest signing in the history of Major League Soccer, having joined Atlanta in 2022 from Velez Sarsfield for 16 million dollars.

The playmaker has proven his worth by scoring 20 goals and providing 23 assists in 67 appearances for Atlanta, with whom he is contracted until December 2026.

Almada has been capped four times for Argentina, including a late cameo appearance in Argentina's 2-0 group-stage victory over Poland at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
