TRIPOLI, March 7 (Xinhua) -- The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, renewed his call to expedite efforts for a compromise to reach a political settlement in Libya.

Bathily made the remarks during a phone call on Wednesday with Aguila Saleh, the speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives, the parliament.

"We exchanged views on the current state of the political process and I renewed my call to expedite efforts towards a compromise," Bathily tweeted on Thursday.

The two officials have agreed to continue consultations to advance a political settlement for elections, and ensure unity, stability and sustainable peace in Libya, Bathily added.

Libya failed to hold general elections in December 2021 as previously scheduled, due to disagreements among the Libyan parties over election laws.

Ever since the fall of the late leader Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011, Libya has been struggling to make a democratic transition amid escalating violence and unrest.
