Bali airport to close for 24 hours for Nyepi Day

JAKARTA, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Ngurah Rai International Airport in Indonesia's resort island of Bali is set to close on Nyepi Day, or Bali's Day of Silence, for 24 hours from 06:00 a.m. local time on March 11.

"The airport will be closed, the lights will be turned off. On Sunday evening we will check all areas (of the airport)," General Manager of PT Angkasa Pura I, Handy Heryudhitiawan, said on Thursday.

Apart from the airport, other public facilities including ports and toll roads will not operate, except for hospitals and police stations.

Bali Mandara Toll road will not reopen until Tuesday, March 12, except for emergency vehicles like ambulances and fire engines.

According to the Balinese calendar, Nyepi Day is a holy day that ushers in the Hindu New Year. The locals in the Bali island are mostly Hindu.

Nyepi Day is a national holiday in the archipelagic country of Indonesia.
