CAIRO, March 7 (Xinhua) -- Egypt has joined an international operation to airdrop humanitarian aid to the Palestinian Gaza Strip which is currently facing ongoing Israeli siege and bombardment, the Egyptian military said in a statement on Thursday.
"Members of the Egyptian Air Force participate in the international coalition to airdrop aid into Gaza from Jordan," the statement said, noting that Jordan, the United States, France, the Netherlands, and Belgium also took part in the operation.
The "urgent humanitarian and relief aid" targets the affected areas in northern Gaza, according to the statement.
Adjacent to the besieged Palestinian enclave, Egypt has been a major aid supplier to Gaza via the Rafah border crossing during the ongoing Israeli attacks. The aid is donated by Egypt and other countries as well as local and international organizations.
Egyptian officials say Egypt has contributed to the delivery of over 80 percent of the total relief supplies sent to Gaza.
Israel launched a massive campaign on Gaza after the Gaza-ruling Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) attacked Israeli towns on Oct. 7 last year, killing about 1,200 Israelis and taking over 200 as hostages.
Since then, Israeli attacks in the enclave have killed 30,800 Palestinians and wounded 72,298 others, according to the latest data released by Gaza's health ministry on Thursday. ■
