AMMAN, March 4 (Xinhua) -- King Abdullah II of Jordan on Monday highlighted the need for maximum efforts to achieve an immediate and permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and to protect civilians, the state-run Petra news agency reported.
He made the remarks during a meeting in Amman with a delegation representing Arab lawmakers in the Israeli parliament, or Knesset, said the report.
The king said Jordan will continue to push for an end to the war and provide humanitarian, relief, and medical assistance by land and air to Gaza, while warning of the danger of continuing the war on the Palestinian enclave and escalating tensions in the West Bank and Jerusalem.
He renewed his commitment to protect and care for the Islamic and Christian holy sites in Jerusalem under the Hashemite custodianship.
The king reiterated Jordan's rejection of any attempts to separate the West Bank and Gaza, which constitute the Palestinian state, or any attempts to forcibly displace Palestinians, said the report.
He stressed the importance of continuing to support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in fulfilling its international mandate. The king also emphasized the need to find a political horizon leading to a just and comprehensive peace based on the two-state solution, which ensured the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
He expressed his appreciation for the important role of the Joint Arab List in the Knesset which includes Arab lawmakers in representing and conveying the Arab voice, and for their supportive positions on efforts to achieve peace and find a political horizon to end the conflict based on the two-state solution. ■
