BAGHDAD, March 3 (Xinhua) -- The government of Iraq's semi-autonomous Kurdistan region on Sunday set June 10, 2024, as the date for the regional parliamentary elections.

A statement by the Kurdistan Regional Presidency said that the President of the region Nechirvan Barzani signed a decision setting the date for holding elections for the upcoming sixth legislative term of the Kurdistan Parliament.

Barzani called on the relevant parties to coordinate with Iraq's Independent High Electoral Commission to prepare for the election, the statement said.

Meanwhile, the commission said in a statement that it will open registration for political parties wishing to participate in the 2024 elections in the region on March 5-14.

The last regional parliamentary elections were held in 2018, with the Kurdistan Democratic Party taking the lead with 45 seats, followed by the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan with 21 seats of the 111-seat regional parliament.

The regional parliamentary elections were supposed to be held in 2022 but failed due to political differences.
