MOGADISHU, March 4 (Xinhua) -- Somalia and the United Nations agencies have embarked on a five-day vaccination campaign against polio aiming to vaccinate 2.75 million children in 80 districts.

The vaccination campaign is being rolled out in collaboration with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Somalia, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the Ministry of Health of Somalia.

According to UNICEF, the campaign which began Sunday is targeting all children aged 0-59 months who are eligible to be vaccinated.

"Working with the Ministry of Health of Somalia and in collaboration with WHO, UNICEF has embarked on a five-day mass vaccination campaign against polio targeting over 2.7 million under-five children in 80 districts," UNICEF said Monday in a brief statement obtained by Xinhua.

The UN Children's Agency said the mass vaccination drive is taking place in the whole of central and southern parts of Somalia.
