The species was discovered by a joint research team during a special survey of amphibian reptile resources at the Leigong Mountain National Nature Reserve, conducted from March to October 2023.
Seven adult specimens were found on rocks and bamboo near streams in areas at elevations of 1,600 to 1,800 meters, according to Li Shize, head of the research team. Male specimens measured between 39.1 millimeters and 49.4 millimeters, and a female specimen measured 49.7 millimeters, Li said.
