YAOUNDE, Feb. 29 (Xinhua) -- The leader of Chad's opposition Socialist Party Without Borders (PSF), Yaya Dillo, was killed following clashes in N'Djamena, the Chadian capital, state prosecutor Oumar Kedellaye said Thursday.
Dillo died Wednesday from injuries sustained after security forces attacked the PSF headquarters, where he was hiding with other party members, Kedellaye told a press briefing. He said an exchange of fire during the attack caused "dozens of deaths and injuries" and led to the arrest of 26 people.
Wednesday's clashes came barely hours after the government accused Dillo of leading an attack on Chad's intelligence agency that allegedly killed "several" people. Dillo is the cousin of the country's transitional president, Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno, who took over from his father, Idriss Deby Itno, following his death in an attack in April 2021.
The attack on the intelligence agency occurred a day after the country's National Election Management Agency announced that the first round of the presidential vote would take place on May 6. The transitional president will run as a candidate for the ruling Patriotic Salvation Movement in the upcoming presidential elections. ■
