JERUSALEM, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Rhythmic Gymnastics World Challenge Cup was canceled due to the security situation in Israel, the Israel Gymnastics Federation said in a statement on Wednesday, citing the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG).

The competition was initially planned to take place between June 26 and 28 at Jerusalem's Pais Arena but was canceled "in view of the current situation in the region," according to FIG's decision.

Since Oct. 7, 2023, when the Israel-Hamas conflict broke out, no international sports events have taken place in Israel.

"We understand the considerations that led to the decision, but at the same time, there is a feeling of disappointment and missing out," stated the Israel Gymnastics Federation.

"We hoped to host an event of the highest standards, as part of our team's preparation for the Olympic Games in Paris," it added. "We intend to hold the event next year, hoping for quieter and safer days."

As a result, the 2024 Challenge Cup series now consists of two competitions, one in Portimao, Portugal, starting on May 10, and the other in Romania's Cluj-Napoca on July 12.
