ACCRA, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Ghana will soon unveil a presidential policy on football to develop young talents for the national teams, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on said Tuesday.

Delivering the 2024 State of the Nation Address in parliament, Akufo-Addo indicated the rationale for the policy is to correct what has gone wrong with Ghana's football, especially with the men's national team, the Black Stars.

He emphasized that the policy is to scout, develop and groom young football talents for the national teams.

"The recent Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d'Ivoire was probably the nadir of the performance of the Black Stars, and has left the nation saddened. I believe it is time for us to take a long-term, far-sighted approach to correct what has gone wrong," said Akufo-Addo.

According to him, the policy will see the country's school sports department of the Ministry of Education work hand in hand with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, in collaboration and synergy with the Ghana Football Association to build district, regional and national juvenile teams for boys and girls.

Ghana's football performance has seen a downward trajectory in recent times. The Black Stars exited in the group stage of this year's AFCON, after suffering a similar fate in 2021.
