BEIJING, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 1.91 percent to 2,957.85 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 2.4 percent lower at 9,047.1 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices totaled 1.36 trillion yuan (about 191.35 billion U.S. dollars), up from 990 billion yuan on the previous trading day.
Stocks in the transgene, corn, and lab-grown meat sectors led the gains, while those related to electronic paper and lithography machines suffered the greatest losses.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 2.51 percent to close at 1,748.97 points on Wednesday. ■
