JAKARTA, Feb. 27 (Xinhua) -- A critically endangered Sumatran elephant calf was born at the Elephant Training Center in Way Kambas National Park on Indonesia's Sumatra Island, said the acting head of the park Hermawan on Tuesday.
With a body weight of 69 kg, shoulder height of 72 cm, chest circumference of 98 cm, body length of 87 cm, and tail length of 50 cm, the daughter of Mama Pleno was born on Feb. 26 at 00:10 a.m. local time.
"She was born in normal and healthy conditions," said Hermawan.
A few hours after birth, the elephant calf suckled from her mother. Additional food and vitamins were also given to the mother to improve the quality of her milk.
Elephant Hospital's medical team is working intensively to ensure that the condition of the elephant calf and mother is good and healthy, added Hermawan. ■
