MOROGORO, Tanzania, Feb. 22 (Xinhua) -- More than 100 experts and delegates from Tanzanian government institutions, institutions of technical and vocational education and training (TVET), and delegates from the industry began a two-day meeting in the Morogoro Region, eastern Tanzania, Thursday to validate occupational standards in important sectors for the growth of the industrial economy.

The occupational standards have been prepared by the National Council for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (NACTVET) in collaboration with local and foreign stakeholders, including Sunmaker, a Chinese company focused on skills development for African youth and the secretariat organization of the China-Africa TVET Alliance.

Opening the event, NACTVET Executive Director Adolf Rutayuga said the prepared work standards are important for promoting professionalism, improving performance, and bringing about change within the workforce.

Rutayuga said the workshop would review and confirm the developed work standards to guide vocational education and training in the preparation and implementation of programs that meet the needs of the labor market and the country's economic agenda.

The prepared occupational standards covered five sectors: construction, transport, energy, agriculture, and information and communications technology, he said, adding that occupational standards are crucial in Tanzania as the country is currently building an industrial economy that requires many qualified and skilled workers.

Zhang Yujia, the acting country director for Sunmaker Tanzania, said Sunmaker, a Chinese organization that aims to develop skills for African youth, began partnering with NACTVET in 2022 to carry out a series of projects.

Zhang said the projects included the revision and development of occupational standards and program development standards, the development of curriculum standards, the digitalization of TVET teaching and learning materials, capacity building for TVET leaders and staff, and joint diploma programs between Chinese institutions and Tanzanian institutions.
