COLOMBO, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) -- There were 2,557 deaths resulting from 2,200 fatal traffic accidents in Sri Lanka in 2023, state media quoted a police spokesman as saying on Monday.
Police spokesman Nihal Thalduwa said that in 2023, pedestrians accounted for the highest number of fatalities in road accidents, with 740 deaths, and 707 motorcyclists lost their lives.
He said that the lowest number of fatal accidents, among vehicle categories, occurred involving buses owned by the Sri Lanka Transport Board and container trucks.
Thalduwa said there were 75 fatal accidents involving the board's buses and 14 accidents involving container vehicles.
In 2022, there were 2,515 deaths from 2,395 fatal accidents, and in 2021, there were 2,513 deaths from 2,414 fatal accidents, according to the police spokesman. ■
