KABUL, Feb. 17 (Xinhua) -- The Counter-Narcotics Police have destroyed 168 acres of poppy farms in south Afghanistan's Helmand, Kandahar and Uruzgan provinces, a statement of the Ministry of Interior Affairs said.

In the drive against illegal crops, the counter-narcotics police have destroyed 160 acres of poppy farms in the southern Helmand province, the statement said, adding police also smashed eight acres of poppy farms in Kandahar and the neighboring Uruzgan provinces recently.

Police have also foiled attempts to smuggle hashish in Kandahar's neighboring Zabul province and discovered three tons of hashish from two vehicles in Siory district of Zabul province last week.

The Afghan caretaker government banned poppy cultivation, its processing to drug and drug trafficking in April 2022, and since then the administration has been fighting to get the war-torn and once poppy growing country rid of the drug menace.
