DAR ES SALAAM, Feb. 10 (Xinhua) -- Tanzanian leaders on Saturday extended greetings to the Chinese people as they celebrated the Spring Festival, or Chinese Lunar New Year.

"On behalf of the people of the United Republic of Tanzania, I extend my warmest wishes to the people of the People's Republic of China, as you celebrate the Chinese New Year 2024 (The Year of the Dragon)," Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan said on X, formerly Twitter.

Hassan said that as red lanterns decorate homes and neighborhoods in China, Chinese communities abroad, and friends around the world, Tanzania wishes them a year filled with good fortunes, happiness, and prosperity.

"May the Year of the Dragon bring abundant joy, laughter, and prosperity to all," Tanzania's Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi said on X.

Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania Chen Mingjian said on Wednesday night that 2024 is the Year of the Dragon, and the dragon is auspicious in the Chinese mindset, a symbol of the spirit of the Chinese nation, representing strength, confidence, good luck, creativity, and enterprising spirit.

She made the remarks at a gala performance by 37 artists from east China's Zhejiang Province that feted Tanzanians and Chinese in Tanzania's port city of Dar es Salaam.
