WINDHOEK, Feb. 9 (Xinhua) -- Namibian President Nangolo Mbumba on Friday appointed Minister of Works and Transport John Mutorwa as deputy prime minister with immediate effect in a Cabinet reshuffle following the death of former President Hage Geingob.
Mbumba told the media that as deputy prime minister, Mutorwa will assist the prime minister in preventing, preparing for, responding to, and recovering from disasters, and will perform other functions as may be assigned by the prime minister.
According to Mbumba, as minister of works and transport, Mutorwa will continue to oversee the development and maintenance of national infrastructure and deepen cooperation with neighboring countries in the development of critical roads, rail, maritime, and aviation infrastructure that facilitate the movement of goods and people.
In the Cabinet reshuffle, Minister of Information and Communication Technology Peya Mushelenga has been transferred to the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation, while Emma Theofelus will assume the role of minister of information and communication technology.
Namibia will hold presidential and parliamentary elections at the end of the year. ■
