NAIROBI, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- Kenya said on Wednesday that it has disbursed 2.09 billion shillings (about 13 million U.S. dollars) in order to cushion low-income households amid rising cost of living.

Joseph Motari, the principal secretary in the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, told journalists in the capital of Nairobi that about 1 million beneficiaries comprising needy and vulnerable households will each receive financial assistance of approximately 12.47 dollars to cater to their needs for one month.

"The beneficiaries will receive the assistance through mobile money platforms," Motari said.

He added that the stipend is aimed at cushioning the households from poverty and hunger as well as improving their lives.

The Ministry of Labor and Social Protection said the recipients include households with orphaned and vulnerable children, persons with severe disabilities as well as older persons.

Motari noted that the government has also released another 36,948 dollars to boost the nutrition of needy households in the country.
