ISLAMABAD, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- Pakistan has announced that its borders with Iran and Afghanistan will be closed during the general elections on Thursday for security purposes.
"To ensure full security during the general elections, to be held in Pakistan on Feb. 8, 2024, border crossings with Afghanistan and Iran would remain closed both for cargo and pedestrians," foreign ministry spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch said in a statement on Wednesday.
Normal operations at the borders will resume on Feb. 9, the spokesperson added.
Security has been beefed up across the country on the directives of the Election Commission of Pakistan, which asked all relevant departments to ensure the safety of political leaders and voters. ■
