TOKYO, Feb. 3 (Xinhua) -- Heavy snow is expected to hit many parts of Japan in the upcoming days, Japan's weather agency said on Saturday, warning of snow accumulation of up to five centimeters, even in the heart of Tokyo.

The forecast indicated widespread rain or snow in western Japan, with the possibility of some areas in Kinki region to experience heavy snow on Sunday, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

In Kanto region, rain or snow is expected to start on the afternoon of Monday, with the possibility of snow even in the heart of Tokyo until Tuesday morning, said the JMA.

The estimated 24-hour snowfall by 6 p.m. local time on Sunday is expected to be up to 15 centimeters in mountainous regions of Kinki and Shikoku, said the JMA, urging caution regarding transportation disruptions due to snow accumulation and road icing.

Citing the onset of midwinter chill in Tokyo on Saturday, JMA meteorologists pointed out that in the next week, snow could accumulate to two centimeters in the city center, and in the worst-case scenario, it could exceed five centimeters, warranting a weather advisory.

Due to a strong winter pressure system, Hokkaido experienced severe weather conditions on Friday, with many drivers experiencing whiteout conditions.

The East Japan Railway Company has warned of significant train delays and destination changes due to snow, especially on conventional lines in the Tokyo metropolitan area, from Monday onwards. Commuters are advised to stay informed about weather conditions and potential disruptions.

In January 2022, when Tokyo experienced 10 centimeters of snow, the Tokyo Metropolitan Expressway was covered in snow, resulting in several cars stranded with hazard lights flashing.
