BUENOS AIRES, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- Former AC Milan midfielder Jose Mauri scored a late equalizer to earn Sarmiento a 1-1 draw at Boca Juniors in Argentina's Primera Division on Thursday.
Miguel Merentiel gave the hosts the ideal start when he ran onto Luis Advincula's perfectly weighted through ball before deftly lifting a shot over onrushing goalkeeper Fernando Monetti.
Boca dominated possession and drove forward in numbers but were unable to score a second goal as the visitors maintained a watertight five-man defensive line.
Mauri sent the home fans into stunned silence with a 72nd-minute strike against the run of play. The 27-year-old capitalized on lax defending from the hosts, finding himself in space as he lashed a first-time effort beyond the reach of goalkeeper Sergio Romero after Joaquin Gho's cross from the right wing.
The result leaves Boca and Sarmiento eighth and ninth, respectively, in Group B with two draws from their opening two matches.
In other fixtures on Thursday, Godoy Cruz won 2-0 at Central Cordoba and Estudiantes prevailed 1-0 at Union Santa Fe. ■
