MOSCOW, Feb. 1 (Xinhua) -- The chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party, Irakli Kobakhidze, was nominated as the country's new prime minister at the party's congress on Thursday.
At the congress, Irakli Garibashvili, former prime minister who resigned Monday, was endorsed by the Political Council of the party to take over the party's chairmanship.
The party broadcast the congress live on TV.
According to the Georgian law, Kobakhidze's nomination has to be approved by the 150-seat parliament with simple majority.
Kobakhidze, born in 1978, has been the chairman of the Georgian Dream party since 2021. ■
