GUANGZHOU, Jan. 31 (Xinhua) -- Wang Minghui, former vice chairman of the Standing Committee of Sichuan Provincial People's Congress, was sentenced to 16 years in prison on Wednesday for taking bribes and abusing power.

Wang was also fined 5 million yuan (about 703,839 U.S. dollars) and had all of his illegal gains from the bribery confiscated and turned over to the state treasury, according to the verdict of the Intermediate People's Court of Foshan, south China's Guangdong Province.

The court found that Wang took advantage of his various positions in Sichuan between 1998 and 2021 to assist other individuals and entities in matters such as project contracting, business operation, and position adjustment. In return, he accepted money and property worth 52.13 million yuan.

Wang was also found guilty of abusing his power and violating relevant laws and regulations in an expressway project in 2013, which resulted in massive losses to public property and the interests of the state and the people, according to the verdict.
