DAMASCUS, Jan. 28 (Xinhua) -- The Syrian forces on Sunday neutralized eight Islamic State (IS) militants in the southern province of Daraa, including two leaders, the state TV reported.
According to the report, the IS members were eliminated during a planned operation in the city of Nawa in the countryside of Daraa.
Among those neutralized were Osama Al-Azzizi, widely known as Al-Shayb, and Awad Al-Awaid, whose alias was Abu Ahmad Al-Qusaiba. Both individuals held influential positions within the IS group, according to the report.
The operation in Nawa is part of an ongoing campaign against ultra-radical groups, particularly in Daraa, which was the birthplace of the Syrian crisis in 2011.
In 2021, despite the Syrian army's return, Daraa continued to experience volatility as sporadic insurgency against the Syrian government persisted. ■
