QALAT, Afghanistan, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- Work for constructing two dams has begun in south Afghanistan's Zabul province, the official news agency Bakhtar reported Saturday.
Built at 300 million afghanis (about 4.08 million U.S. dollars) along the Kabul-Kandahar highway in Zabul province, the dams would benefit thousands of families, including farmers, by bringing more land with water to increase their agricultural products, the report said.
War-torn and cash-strapped Afghanistan has been importing power from its neighboring countries of Iran, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan to meet domestic demands. ■
