TEHRAN, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian on Friday congratulated South Africa for "winning" a genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
In a post on the social media platform X, he congratulated the South African people and Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Naledi Pandor, as well as the Palestinians on the ICJ's ruling, which ordered Israel to prevent genocide acts in the Gaza Strip.
"I once again reaffirm Iran's support for the South African government's initiative," Amir-Abdollahian said, adding that the White House's "all-out support" for Israel's "crimes" would not be forgotten and is being monitored by global public opinion.
The Iranian foreign minister urged his counterparts worldwide to back South Africa's move at the ICJ.
The ICJ in The Hague on Friday delivered a ruling on South Africa's genocide case against Israel, ordering Israel to take all possible measures to prevent genocide acts in Gaza and demanding Israel to report on the measures regarding the order within one month.
The court, however, did not order Israel to suspend its military operations in Gaza, one of the main requests submitted by South Africa. The court also called on Hamas to release all Israeli hostages.
South Africa filed the lawsuit to the ICJ on Dec. 29, 2023, accusing Israel of violating the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide related to Palestinians in Gaza. ■
