WINDHOEK, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- Namibia on Friday welcomed the decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) regarding the application of the Genocide Convention in the Gaza Strip, where South Africa has taken Israel to court.
The ICJ, as the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, issued provisional measures on Jan. 26, 2024, ordering Israel to prevent acts listed under Article 2 of the Genocide Convention. Namibia welcomed the ICJ's decision, expressing its commitment to international law and appreciating the steps taken to address the critical situation in Gaza.
In response to the ICJ's decision, Namibia is urging Israel to comply fully with the legally binding order while calling upon the United Nations Security Council and the International Community to ensure the comprehensive implementation of the provisional measures laid out by the ICJ.
Namibian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah reiterated her plea for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza to prevent further harm and suffering among the Palestinian people. ■
