COLOMBO, Jan. 26 (Xinhua) -- Plans are in place to use 31 identified reservoirs for floating solar power plants in Sri Lanka, with the potential to generate an additional 3,077 megawatts of electricity, a state minister said on Friday.

State Minister of Irrigation Shasheendra Rajapaksa told media that this innovative approach leverages existing infrastructure and resources to address the country's growing energy needs.

Rajapaksa said that the project Uma Oya is expected to add 120 megawatts of electricity to the national grid by Feb. 15, which marks a significant step towards improving Sri Lanka's energy security.

He said the budgetary allocation of 23.4 billion rupees (73.4 million U.S. dollars) for the ministry, with 6.9 million rupees (21.7 million dollars) dedicated to reservoir maintenance.
