BEIRUT, Jan. 23 (Xinhua) -- A Hezbollah fighter was killed and four civilians were injured on Tuesday in Israeli raids on Lebanese towns and villages near the Lebanese-Israeli border, Lebanese sources told Xinhua.

Medical sources told Xinhua that the Tebnin Governmental Hospital received four wounded civilians, including two Syrian women who were injured in an Israeli airstrike targeting a house in a border town in southern Lebanon.

Military sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that Israeli warplanes and drones carried out eight airstrikes by launching 32 missiles on six towns and villages in southern Lebanon.

They said that one of the Israeli raids targeted a house in the Iqlim al-Tuffah area, 22 km from the borderline separating Lebanon and Israel.

Israeli heavy artillery fired about 100 shells, including 30 phosphorus shells, on 15 villages and towns in southern Lebanon, destroying eight houses and causing damage to 22 others, they added.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah said its fighters attacked Israeli positions in Meron, Khirbet Maar, Cobra Hill, and Ruwaisat al-Alam.

The Lebanese-Israeli border has been witnessing increased tension since Oct. 8, 2023, after Hezbollah fired rockets toward Israel in support of the Hamas attacks on Israel the previous day, prompting Israel to respond by firing heavy artillery toward southeastern Lebanon.

The confrontations between Hezbollah and Israel have killed 230 on the Lebanese side, including 164 Hezbollah members and 39 civilians, according to Lebanese security sources.
