ISLAMABAD, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Police of the Pakistani capital Islamabad on Monday dispelled fears of insecurity amid reported threats of terrorism, saying that the law-and-order situation is under control and citizens can continue their routine lives.

Islamabad police chief Akbar Nasir issued a video statement after several universities, colleges and schools were closed due to fears of a possible terror attack, saying that no notification had been issued regarding the closure of universities.

"Some reports are circulating regarding schools and colleges in Islamabad. I want to tell you that the security and law and order situation in Islamabad is under control. The situation at the moment does not demand residents to change their daily lives and stop going to educational institutions," added Nasir.

The police chief said security had already been beefed up in the capital due to the upcoming elections and ongoing sit-in by some protesters in the downtown area, but the citizens need to follow instructions from the police being released on its social media platforms.

On Monday morning, local media quoted official sources as reporting that police and other law enforcement agencies conducted overnight operations in different areas of the city, including hostels of educational institutions, after receiving intelligence about possible presence of terrorists planning to attack.
