ABUJA, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- At least 16 people were killed when a commercial bus lost control and plunged into a ditch on the Kano-Kaduna expressway in Nigeria's northern state of Kaduna, the traffic police said on Monday.
Speaking with Xinhua on the phone, Kabir Nadabo, a commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps in Kaduna, said that four others were injured in the incident, which occurred on Sunday.
The incident was caused by overspeeding, as the driver lost control of the vehicle, Nadabo said, citing an investigation by the traffic police. He added that the injured were rushed to a government hospital.
Nadabo warned motorists against violating road safety guidelines and urged other road users, particularly commuters, to always caution commercial vehicle drivers against overspeeding.
Deadly road accidents are frequently reported in Nigeria, often caused by overloading, bad road conditions, and reckless driving. ■
