Fires kill 77, injure 193 in Myanmar in 2023

YANGON, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Seventy-seven people were killed and 193 people were injured by fire in Myanmar in 2023, an official from the country's fire services department said Monday.

A total of 1,362 fire accidents occurred during the period, causing damage estimated to be at 35.5 billion kyats (over 16.6 million U.S. dollars), U Thet Tun Oo, Director of Myanmar Fire Services Department, told Xinhua.

Most of the fire accidents during the period in the country occurred in Yangon Region with 232 fire accidents, followed by Shan State with 183 accidents and Mandalay Region with 175 accidents respectively, he said.

Most of the fire outbreaks last year were caused by negligence and faulty electrical wiring, he said, adding that the causes of the fire outbreaks during the period also included arson and forest fire.

In 2022, a total of 1,507 fire accidents occurred in the Southeast Asian country, killing 96 and injuring 139 people, he said.
