TASHKENT, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Uzbekistan is a nation situated in the hinterlands of Central Asia and adjacent to Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Afghanistan. The country was a hub on the Silk Road in ancient times, and was among the very first countries to endorse the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
Tashkent, the capital city of Uzbekistan, is an oasis center on the banks of the Chirchik River, a distributary of the Syrdarya. In Uzbek the word "tashkent" means "stone city."
With a history of more than 2,000 years, Tashkent used to serve as a major transportation hub on the ancient Silk Road that connected the East with the West.
