BEIJING, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Monday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 2.68 percent to 2,756.34 points.
The Shenzhen Component Index closed 3.5 percent lower at 8,479.55 points.
The combined turnover of stocks covered by the two indices totaled 794.07 billion yuan (about 111.68 billion U.S. dollars), up from 666.6 billion yuan on the previous trading day.
Shares related to medical care, games and media, hotel catering and food consumption suffered major losses.
The ChiNext Index, tracking China's Nasdaq-style board of growth enterprises, lost 2.83 percent to close at 1,666.88 points Monday. ■
