THE HAGUE, Jan. 21 (Xinhua) -- Dutch league leaders PSV failed to better a 36-year-old record with a 1-1 draw with FC Utrecht on Sunday after having notched 17 wins in a row.
In the 1987-1988 season, PSV, which won the European Cup (later known as the UEFA Champions League) for the first and only time back then, set an Eredivisie record of 17 consecutive wins since the start of the season.
PSV got an early lead through Belgian forward Johan Bakayoko while failing to continue its momentum afterwards. In the second half, FC Utrecht had more chances and Othmane Boussaid produced the deserved equalizer in the 53rd minute.
The draw means PSV's 17-game winning streak was brought to an end, as what it did following a 2-2 draw at home to FC Twente on January 16, 1988.
Despite the draw, PSV maintained a comfortable lead with 52 points from 18 matches, ten points ahead of Feyenoord.
Also on Sunday, Feyenoord beat Vitesse 2-1 and Ajax sailed past RKC Waalwijk 4-1. ■
