ACCRA, Jan. 19 (Xinhua) -- Ghana has seen a continued decline in childhood mortality rates, according to the latest government report.
The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) released the 2022 Ghana Demographic and Health Survey Thursday, providing the latest survey results across the country. The report noted that the country's under-5 mortality rate has declined 33.3 percent from 2014 to 2022, while the infant mortality rate, covering children who die before their first birthdays, declined 31.7 percent during the same period.
Samuel Annim, the government statistician at the GSS, said the report indicates that the government's health sector programs are yielding positive results in many respects.
While the national figures generally look encouraging, this does not cut across all regions because some regions have worrying results, which is a wake-up call for the government to focus on those regions as well, Annim noted.
Sharmila Lareef, multi-country assignment officer for Ghana, Liberia, Gambia and Sierra Leone at the World Health Organization (WHO), commended the GSS for producing the report, saying that it will contribute to the international database, and the WHO will utilize all the relevant reports to provide better service in Ghana. ■
