PAMPLONA, Spain, Jan. 17 (Xinhua) -- Real Sociedad qualified for the quarterfinals of the Copa del Rey on Wednesday night as they won a derby 2-0 away to Osasuna.
Real Sociedad captain Mikel Oyarzabal put his side ahead from the penalty spot in the 57th minute after Jose Catena pulled back Robin le Normand.
The Osasuna defender was also sent off for preventing a clear goal scoring opportunity.
Although last season's beaten finalists tried to get into the game, they failed to really trouble visiting keeper Alex Remiro, and Real Sociedad doubled their lead in the sixth minute of the injury time.
Osasuna keeper Aitor Fernandez brought down Brais Mendez, and although he saved Mendez's spot kick, Mikel Merino followed up to slam home a second goal and assure the win.
Elsewhere, La Liga leaders Girona wasted no time in booking the second quarterfinal appearance in the club's history as Cristhian Stauni scored after 15 and 19 minutes (the second from the penalty spot), to put his side 2-0 up at home to Rayo Vallecano.
Daley Blind added a third in the 26th minute, and although Randy Nteka pulled a goal back for Rayo before the break, there was no way back for the Madrid-based side.
Rafa Benitez's Celta Vigo knocked his former club Valencia out of the tournament with a 3-1 win in the Mestalla Stadium.
Greek striker Anastasios Douvikas followed up his brace of goals in the last round with two more, while Luca de la Torre also scored for Celta. Valencia's goal was a first half penalty from Pepelu.
On Tuesday, Athletic Bilbao won 2-0 at home to Alaves, Sevilla won 3-1 away to Getafe, and Mallorca sneaked past Tenerife 1-0 win a 120th minute goal.
The last two quarterfinal places will be decided on Thursday when Atletico Madrid play Real Madrid and FC Barcelona visit Unionistas de Salamanca. ■
