ZANZIBAR, Tanzania, Jan. 15 (Xinhua) -- Tanzania's ruling party, Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), on Monday chose a career diplomat as the party's new secretary general following the resignation of former Secretary General Daniel Chongolo in November 2023.
Paul Makonda, CCM ideology and publicity secretary, declared Emmanuel Nchimbi, a career diplomat and former minister of home affairs, as the party's new secretary general.
Makonda told a news conference at the end of CCM's one-day extraordinary meeting in Zanzibar that Nchimbi was approved by members of the party's National Executive Committee after the name was proposed by the party's Central Committee.
The meeting was chaired by Samia Suluhu Hassan, chairperson of CCM and president of Tanzania.
Nchimbi served as minister of home affairs from May 2012 to December 2013 before he was appointed as the Tanzanian ambassador to Brazil from 2016 to 2021, and he was relocated to Egypt from 2022 to 2023. ■
