MOROGORO, Tanzania, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- At least 1,200 train passengers were stranded in the Morogoro region, eastern Tanzania, after heavy rains washed away a rail track Thursday night, an official said Friday.

The Tanzania Railways Corporation (TRC) director general Masanja Kadogosa said the train was heading to Kigoma region in western Tanzania from the country's commercial hub of Dar es Salaam.

"Engineers are working around the clock to restore the washed away rail track," Kadogosa told Xinhua when reached on the phone.

Herman Ngonyani, TRC acting regional manager for Morogoro, said two other passenger trains were also stranded in Dodoma and Singida regions as the rains washed away rail tracks. He didn't give the number of passengers affected.

Ngonyani said TRC is making arrangements to ferry the stranded passengers by buses.
