SINGAPORE, Jan. 12 (Xinhua) -- Singapore's maritime container throughput reached a new high of 39.01 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in 2023, said acting Transport Minister Chee Hong Tat Friday.
Addressing the Singapore Maritime Foundation New Year Conversations, Chee noted that annual vessel arrival tonnage in Singapore set a high of 3.09 billion gross tons last year, an increase of 9.4 percent from 2022.
Singapore's maritime terminal handled 591.70 million tons of cargo in 2023, and the total tonnage of ships under the Singapore flag reached 99.56 million gross tons, Chee added.
The acting minister also called for upgrading the port with digital and environment-friendly technologies and building a local maritime talent pool to satisfy the need for a rapidly transforming maritime industry. ■
