MWANZA, Tanzania, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Mwanza region authorities in northwestern Tanzania said on Wednesday that 28 patients have been diagnosed with cholera.

Amos Makalla, the Mwanza regional commissioner, urged residents in the region, located on the shores of Lake Victoria, Africa's largest lake by area and the world's largest tropical lake, to take precautionary measures against the infectious disease.

On Jan. 5, Mboni Mhita, the Kahama district commissioner in neighboring Shinyanga region, south of Mwanza, said five people had been killed by cholera in the district and 452 others were under quarantine for observation.

Several African countries have recently reported a cholera outbreak, with Zambia recording over 200 fatalities since October last year.
