COLOMBO, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) -- Over 15,000 families in Sri Lanka have been affected by the adverse weather in recent days, the head of the country's Disaster Management Center (DMC) said on Thursday.
Director General of the DMC, Sudantha Ranasinghe, addressing the media to elaborate on the effects of continuous heavy rains, said 15,363 families have been affected in Ampara district in Sri Lanka's Eastern Province.
District Secretary of Ampara, Chinthaka Abeywickrama said that they have established eight relief camps to house the most affected.
Ranasinghe said the current inclement weather is causing havoc in the north-central, northern and eastern provinces.
The water levels of major tanks maintained by the irrigation department are at 95 percent, and water levels in tanks managed by the Ceylon Electricity Board and Mahaweli Authority are at about 97 percent, he said.
Meanwhile, the country's meteorological department said the rain will subside from Thursday onward. ■
