HANOI, Jan. 6 (Xinhua) -- Vietnam's durian export is heading for 3.5 billion U.S. dollars in revenue this year after jumping by five times to finish at more than 2 billion dollars in 2023, local media reported Friday, citing the country's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Dang Phuc Nguyen, general secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetables Association, said that durian export might reach 3.5 billion dollars this year as higher durian output is projected coupled with more planting area and packaging facilities being granted codes for exports to China, according to a report by a local newspaper Vietnam News.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien said if a protocol on exporting frozen durian was signed with China in 2024, Vietnam's durian export would increase more.

Vietnamese durian is now exported to eight markets, among which China accounted for 97 percent of the total export volume.

Last year, Vietnam's durian export revenue posted 2.2 billion dollars, accounting for nearly 40 percent of the country's total fruit and vegetable exports.
