HANOI, Jan. 5 (Xinhua) -- Nearly 160,000 enterprises were established in Vietnam in 2023, posting a record high and a surge of 7.2 percent year-on-year, according to the statistics released by the General Statistics Office on Friday.

The number of laborers of the newly-established firms last year was more than 1 million, increasing 7.3 percent compared to 2022.

New firms in the agriculture, forestry and fishery sector declined 9.3 percent, while those in industry and construction expanded 4.8 percent and the services sector up 8.3 percent compared to 2022.

Last year, 58,412 businesses, which previously temporarily ceased operations due to difficulties, resumed their activities. Meanwhile, about 172,600 enterprises were dissolved, up 20.5 percent.

The Agency for Business Registration under the Ministry of Planning and Investment forecast that the total number of newly registered businesses in 2024 will reach about 162,500, increasing 2 percent.

The agency forecast more than 178,000 firms will withdraw from the market this year.

The number of businesses withdrawing from the market in 2024 is expected to increase. However, the upward is likely to cool down significantly compared to the previous period affected by COVID-19's prolonged impacts, said the agency.
